The Hispanic-Anglosphere: transnational networks, global communities (late 18th-20th centuries)’ is an international research network funded by the AHRC and the University of Winchester in partnership with the National Trust Tyntesfield and the Centre of American Studies at the Universidad Adolfo Ibáñez in Chile. We challenge old assumptions of enmity and isolation through the development of a new critical conceptual framework – the ‘Hispanic-Anglosphere’ – to study individuals, networks and communities that made of the British Isles a crucial hub for the global Hispanic world and a bridge between Spanish Europe, Spanish Africa, Spanish Asia and the Americas at a period that, perhaps not unlike today, was marked by natural disasters, the dislocation of global polities, nation-state building and the rise of nationalism (late 18th to early 20th centuries). Read more about our rationale HERE.
And we are busy at work! Historians in the British Isles, continental Europe, the Americas and Russia in association with scholars from other disciplines and non-academic partners are implementing the project’s agenda mainly through this interactive website. For example, the network initiated the systematic identification of key INDIVIDUALS and of scholarly-produced material on NETWORKS and COMMUNITIES (click the highlighted words to get a glimpse into our current research). We are very aware of the open-ended character of our project, but the data gathered is already being used for thematically mapping and studying the activities of relevant individuals and communities to throw light over little known instances and processes of entanglement. A further key activity consists of encouraging the public interpretation of a wide range of Archival, Audio-visual and Material evidence (RESOURCES) relating to the Hispanic-Anglosphere and bringing them, and our academic discussions, to a wider audience (PUBLIC HISTORY); for example, through the pilot experience of launching our first online exhibition “Exploring the Hispanic-Anglosphere” (periodically updated with the addition of new panels) and by offering a free downloadable Hispanic Itinerary for visitors of NT Tyntesfield.
We also hold regular academic WORKSHOPS AND PUBLIC EVENTS.
And we have even more ambitious plans, so don’t forget to read our news and to follow this site!
